The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is located in the 43 square kilometers of the Sepilok Kapilee Forest Reserve, Sandakan. Abandoned or homeless endangered orangutans are sent to the center to be treated and taught the apes' survival skills and lifestyle by the reserve managers. Until a certain age, the reserve managers will send the orangutans back to nature. The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the orangutan is about 96.4% similar to that of humans, and it is a rare protected animal. The center also has an information center and a video room about the establishment of the center and explanations of orangutans.
The Sun Bear Conservation Center, which was established in 2008. The first founder, Huang Xiude, is a biologist who studies sun bears. The center has the same goal as the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center to protect the rare protected species of the sun bear. In 2013, the number of shelters was as high as about 28 sun bears, most of which were rescued from the harsh environment. The apes or sun bears housed in each center are free to move outdoors, and there is a limited time to watch them at the observation deck.
